My Recommendations

I live in Los Angeles, so most of these businesses and sources are based in southern California. Many are small, family-owned companies with friendly, caring staffs who love what they do... and when problems arise (as they inevitably do), they make things right without fuss or hassle. Most rely on word-of-mouth to attract new customers, so here are a few words about my favorites.

Comfort Control Corp. – From calculating the airflow needs of each room to expert installation and maintenance, Comfort Control is the most professional and competent heating and air-conditioning company I've encountered. They went the extra mile to engineer a ductwork system with registers placed to maximize both efficiency and aesthetics.
Imperial Design Group – Located in an industrial part of Gardena, CA, this warehouse is a treasure chest full of the most incredible stone tile, statuary, mantles, and more. Their prices are always unbeatable — but are even more of a steal during one of their special sales or auctions.
Pennsylvania Builders Supply (6659 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90038, 323-957-7620) – From sump pumps to chimney flues, this is the place to buy supplies. Their prices are fabulous, but what really sets them apart is the friendly, funny, knowledgeable staff whose generous advice is invaluable.
Sava Roofing Co. (Panorama City, CA 91402, 818-988-8195) – Mike Swiderski is an artist with roofing tile and a wizard with a hot mop. He finds and banishes leaks that other roofers fail to fix. The life expectancy of a typical hot-mop roof is ten to twelve years; Mike's hot mop on my home is still leak-free and in superb condition after eighteen years.
Troutwine Plumbing (Simi Valley, CA 93062, 818-592-6445) – Top-quality workmanship with first-class materials — and at reasonable prices. Our city inspector signed off on a whole-house Troutwine rough-in with the compliment "Nice job."
Valencia Electric – Today's high-tech homes put a bigger maze of wires in the walls than ever before. When my architect's electrical plan proved inadequate, Valencia Electric guided and assisted me in creating a perfect layout for my 2200 square foot dream home — and then made it a reality.
